Stop alla repressione! Solidarietà al Front Line Socialist Party dello Sri Lanka! (IT+EN)

Nella giornata di martedì 9 giugno, il Front Line Socialist Party (FLSP) dello Sri Lanka ha organizzato a Colombo un presidio pacifico davanti all’ambasciata USA, in solidarietà con la sollevazione antirazzista seguita all’assassinio di George Floyd e contro il terrorismo e il razzismo di Stato americani. Il concentramento si è svolto nel rigoroso rispetto delle norme di distanziamento sociale fissate per il contenimento della pandemia da coronavirus.

Denunciamo con forza la brutalità con cui le forze di polizia del governo di Colombo hanno represso la manifestazione. Gli agenti hanno infatti iniziato ad arrestare membri del partito e attivisti ancora prima che la protesta avesse inizio, sostenendo di agire in conformità a un’ordinanza del tribunale che ne vietava lo svolgimento in quel luogo. Preso atto dell’impossibilità di manifestare nei pressi dell’ambasciata USA, è stato lanciato un nuovo concentramento in un luogo diverso, ma le squadre antisommossa sono intervenute, attaccando violentemente i dimostranti. Il bilancio finale è di quarantadue membri del Partito arrestati, tra i quali il segretario generale Kumar Gunaratnam, il segretario alla propaganda Duminda Nagamuwa e diversi membri del Comitato Centrale. Nella serata, i compagni arrestati sono stati rilasciati in attesa del processo, fissato per l’11 giugno, che giudicherà circa le pretestuose accuse di violazione dei provvedimenti di distanziamento sociale e quarantena.

Esprimiamo la nostra piena e fraterna solidarietà al Front Line Socialist Party e ai compagni arrestati, per i quali esigiamo il proscioglimento pieno e la fine di ogni forma di restrizione delle libertà personali. Condanniamo l’intensificazione delle attività repressive contro i movimenti popolari nello Sri Lanka.

In molti paesi del mondo, tra cui anche l’Italia, la pandemia ha fornito l’avallo per pesanti restrizioni dei diritti e delle libertà civili da parte dei governi. Come internazionalisti è nostro dovere vigilare insieme, con una rete di solidarietà attiva e militante, affinché le restrizioni cessino del tutto appena possibile e non possano, in nessun caso e in nessun luogo, essere usate strumentalmente per reprimere il dissenso e soffocare le lotte popolari.

Essere a fianco del FPLP e dei compagni arrestati a Colombo è dunque anche un modo per tutelare efficacemente gli spazi di agibilità democratica di tutte e tutti noi.

On Tuesday, June 9, the Front Line Socialist Party (FLSP) of Sri Lanka organized a peaceful garrison in Colombo in front of the U.S. Embassy, in solidarity with the anti-racist uprising following the assassination of George Floyd and against U.S. terror and racist regime. The concentration took place in strict compliance with the rules of social distancing established for the containment of the coronavirus outbreak.

We strongly denounce the brutality of the police forces. They arrested party members and activists even before the protest had begun, claiming that they were acting under a court order which forbids public meetings. When it was clear that it was impossible to demonstrate near the U.S. embassy, comrades called for a new concentration in a different location. Still, anti-protester police intervened, violently attacking the demonstrators.

The final count is 42 Party members arrested, including Secretary-General Kumar Gunaratnam, Propaganda Secretary Duminda Nagamuwa and several members of the Central Committee. In the evening, the arrested comrades were released while awaiting trial, scheduled in two days (June 11), on the pretentious accusations of violation of social distancing and quarantine measures.

We express our full and fraternal solidarity with the FLSP and the arrested comrades, for whom we demand a full acquittal and an end to all forms of restriction of personal liberties. We condemn the intensification of repressive activities against popular movements in Sri Lanka.

In many countries around the world, including Italy, the pandemic has provided backing for burdensome restrictions on civil rights and freedoms by governments. As internationalists, we must work together, with a network of active and militant solidarity, to ensure that the restrictions cease entirely as soon as possible and cannot, under any circumstances and nowhere, be used to repress dissent and stifle people’s struggles.

We must support the FLSP and its comrades arrested in Colombo. This is also a way of adequately protecting the democratic spaces of all of us.
